Two weeks from today (August 10th), I’ll have braces. I found out 2 years ago that I needed them and finally got the courage to go get them on so I can get them off sooner. When I tell people I need braces, they usually say, “Your teeth don’t look that bad!” or “Didn’t you have them when you were younger?”. No, my teeth don’t look bad and no, I didn’t have them when I was younger.
Here’s why I need braces (and possibly jaw surgery): When I was younger it was iffy- my bite was close, but not perfect. I used a popsicle stick to get my top teeth over the bottom and didn’t have braces in hopes that my teeth would grow into a good bite and all would end up okay. It didn’t and now my teeth have forced themselves into a bite, while also wearing themselves out. When I bite down my teeth grind on each other and get weaker and weaker with each bite.
There’s a chance I might have to have jaw surgery in addition to braces. The whole problem exists because of my bottom jaw being longer than my top. I’m hoping we don’t have to go this route, but will find out when I meet with the oral suregon (braces on!) at the end of August.
When I went to the orthodontist, they took some photos and xrays- pretty cool to see what’s actually goin on, thanks to a scanner and my photoshop notes you can see too! (***Be sure to click on each photo so it opens up in a new window and you can actually read my notes. If you’re using Firefox, you should get a little magnifying glass instead of a mouse arrow and you can zoom in.)
