If you haven’t heard the news, there’s been some major forest fires spreading across Colorado and Utah this summer. Just like our winter with very little snow, we’re having a summer with very little rain. It hadn’t rained here in over 3 weeks and things were drying up.
A week before the 4th of July, Park City cancelled personal fireworks and open fires and pulled all the fireworks off the shelves in stores. The only fireworks that were going to happen were the professional, large scale displays and those were only with intense fire dept supervision and planning.
A fire nearby on the 3rd of July cancelled this plan and after smelling the smoke in the air and seeing the smoke clouds and ash, I decided I was a’ok with that. Would you want to have fireworks show when it looks like this outside? Scary!
A fire broke out about 40 miles from Park City in Alpine, UT – it was 2-3 canyons away from the backside of Canyons and PCMR ski resorts. Thankfully it didn’t make it to us. Due to the wind direction, we got all of it’s smoke and even some ashes falling from the sky.

Chris took this photo outside our apartment. That is not a cloud. Usually you’d be able to see the Olympic Park from here.
A really great photo of the smoke that afternoon, including signs that have been present in town for the past few weeks explaining that Fireworks and Open Fires have been banned ’til the fall.

Instead of going to fireworks at Canyons that night, we had some friends over for dinner and games. Yum!
The Fourth of July itself went really well. I had a really good day and was okay without fireworks. I do a volunteer thing with the city and plan some games for kids. Here’s our booth- thanks to Grandma for the nice decorations!
Here’s Megan, she’s my co-chair for kids games. Without her help, I wouldn’t be doing this!
I also got Chris to help. Part of what we did was put temporary tattoos on kids. This kid wanted one on his belly. Strange!
Brownie stopped on by to say hi and do some hula-hooping with me. She let me wear these cool glasses her mom gave her. I think I look pretty good, kids would for sure want to come play the kids games with me.
I’m not sure if Chris is juggling hula-hoops or what he’s doing, but it looks like he’s having fun?
Later that day we went out to Katie and Matt’s house (cabin) for a BBQ – notice the sign about fire danger? They’re all over the place!
This was a funny sign outside the entrance to where they live. Not related to fire, but pretty funny anyway.
We used the grill, but took big precautions with a hose nearby and soaking the deck first.
Here’s the crew (and Phil- he’s the dog) hanging out enjoying some BBQ.
This story does have a happy ending. It rained on July 5th and 6th and 7th. What a relief! A co-worker and I almost went out and danced in the rain. It was such a relief to have a cloudy day!
