The 2009-2010 winter season has officially started. I went snowboarding for the first time last Friday. It was more work than usual, as we had to hike up the mountain to snowboard down, but it was well worth it.
Chris, Anthony and I hiked up Alta. Usually a ski only resort- but the resort’s not open and is on national forest land, so the land is open to anyone, the lifts are for skiers only when the resort’s open. It’s about a 2 hour hike up, and a 10 minute ride down.
For those that don’t know: the way you hike up is to usually take the most flat path you can find (sometimes a cat track or traverse) and hike along. When the snow is deep you have to pack your boots in, almost as if you were making stairs. Chris and I have special backpacks that you strap the snowboard in on your back. We also use poles to help with balance.
