My 4th Marathon was the best one I’ve done and the worst one at the same time, but in the end I’m still happy I did it. I freaking love running.
Worst: I woke up at 6 am to the sound of rain drops and got myself mentally ready for a rainy run. There was no way after training all summer that I was going to let a rainy day keep me from running the marathon I’d planned on for the past 6 months. The rain let up by the time we left the house and didn’t start again until about 1/2 hour into the race. It started out with just small rain drops and then eventually really got going to the point where it was downpouring. It rained so hard, there were puddles everywhere! This wasn’t just a normal summer rain either, it was cold cold fall rain. We were soaked from head to toe, and slightly cold but kept running. This marathon had the worst weather I experienced so far in my running days- if I was out on a training run, I would have headed home early to sit in the bath and warm up. Today, that was not an option, so I kept on goin. The rain stopped around mile 9 or so and I started to warm up, little by little.
Best: The rest of the marathon went REALLY well. I don’t know what I did differently, but somehow I didn’t have to fight myself to keep on going as much as I’m used to. By mile 17 or so, it starts to become a constant battle of “I wanna be done” and “No, you can’t!” in my head. I didn’t get there until mile 25, if at all. Jennie, Chris and I ran the WHOLE race– none of that walk some, run some stuff that we’re used to. I haven’t run a whole marathon since my first one in 2005. I’m pretty excited about how good this one felt and how postitive I remained throughout the whole race.
I crossed the line right alonside my training buddies, Jennie and Chris with a time of 5 hours 17 minutes and 18 seconds, EXACTLY the same time and them! Thanks for all your help on those long runs, it was a great training season with a fantastic finish.
