Meet Penguin. She’s our new best friend.
If you know Chris and I, you most likely knew we were planning to get a big white dog and name it Snowtime. Well… as you’ll notice this dog isn’t all that big and she’s not white, but we love her so much we don’t really care.
We fostered 2 big white possible Snowtimes and realized we wanted a dog that had the personality (mellow and lazy) of a big dog, but really liked people. Great Pyrenees are guardian dogs, so are more concerned with protecting their flock (us) rather than being cuddly and loyal to her people. We thought we could just find the right one after trying more and more big white dogs, but then we decided to just go into Furburbia (the local shelter) and see who else was around.
We originally went in to look at a German Shepard, but took him for a walk and he was too wild, and had way too much energy. We brought him back from the walk and asked them for someone more mellow.. and they said, you want mellow, then you want Maddie! I have to admit, I looked at her in her cage and was like, yeah right – they convinced us to take her for a walk. We took her out and stopped twice just for pets. She IS mellow.
Yep, this is normally what she does at home. She has a toy under her right arm. Just lays around entertaining herself.
We took her home to foster her Tuesday night and brought her back on Wednesday asking for just one more foster night. She’s really cuddly – we give her hugs, lots of pets and she likes to sleep next to us while we’re watching tv or Chris is working in the daytime. We can turn her on or off – if it’s time to play or go outside we can get her pretty excited and eager, but she’s mostly happy just following us around the house and chewing on her toys or sleeping. Mellow like the big white dog we were looking for but about 1/2 the size.
Wednesday night, Irene brought her pug, Pudgy over to test out how she was with other dogs – verdict was in.. She was great! Here’s a photo of Penguin and Pudgy.
By Thursday morning, we decided we’d miss her just too much if we sent her back and she HAD to be ours. So adopted her that afternoon – we’re on a 7 day trial adoption now, but she’s basically officially ours. There’s no way we’re letting her go!
Making it official at Furburbia on Thursday!
Playing fetch at the dog park on Saturday.
Going for a walk behind our house on the trail on Sunday.
Penguin and I love the snow!
We’re pretty much Petco regulars these days. Other than the U of M leash we got for Christmas (Thanks Ben+Jess!) We bought her this nice purple collar (I picked it out) and name tag with a skull on it (Chris picked it out) and she’s wearing a black harness to help her not feel to embarrassed that she has to wear it. It blends in with her black back. She has to have a leash attached to her harness b/c she’s a little overweight and her head is smaller than her neck and the collar would fall off. We sorta like our Penguin chubby, because we think it’s cute, but it’s only a matter of time ’til she hikes off those extra pounds!
