We drove to and from Minnesota for those two exciting days. Here’s some photos from our trip. We took 2 days on each end and aimed to drive about 9 hours each day for an 18 hour trip total. It was actually a nice way to have a little time to ourselves before and after all the really busy few days in Minnesota.
Leaving Utah – car is packed full of wedding decorations and one really cute dog.
We folded down all the seats and put Penguin’s crate up to block her in the back, sometimes it worked as a block, sometimes not.
The block is working and she’s asleep on her bed.
Block is not working and she’s creeping up front asking for pets from the driver!
On Monday night we stayed in a pretty crappy Motel 6 in Wyoming. We were pretty tapped out money-wise from the wedding and 1:30am, just wanted something that was good enough and had a bed. It was not exactly clean feeling, but enough to get a good night’s sleep and some great coffee and bagels nearby the next morning!
We stopped at Wall Drug in Wall, SD. I think there’s a photo of me as a kid on this jackalope.
Free ice water! As someone who doesn’t drink bottled water, this is awesome.
We learned that South Dakota has GREAT rest stops. They’re super clean and have people staffing them that say hi to you when you stop in to take a break. Also really nice places for Penguins to run around and play ball. She loved getting out of the car just as much as we did.
Our first look at Ajawah on Wednesday – not really that much work to do. It’s already a perfect place!
We went to a Twins game with Katie, Matt and Brownie on Wednesday night – and found someone with these signs. We didn’t actually make them, we just borrowed them from someone else! How perfect!
Thursday was Ajawah setup day. Here’s our setup for the ceremony on the beach. The kickboards are where people stand and the paddles are where people sit. Notice Penguin helping?
Brownie and Matt helped get the flags up, but not without trying them on first!?
Katie got the flowers all set. They turned out so good! She and her mom got flowers from the Farmers’ Market and put them in bottles and six packs. They looked amazing.
Jess made us these cute little penguins!
On Sunday after the wedding, we finally let Penguin go for a swim off the dock. She loved it, proving she’d be a really good Minnesota dog.
We left to drive back to Utah on Monday and all basically felt just like this. We let Penguin sleep in the back seat as a normal seat – after we learned that she rides better in the car this way versus the way the way we drove out.
My mom packed us a lunch – I think we only drove 3 hours ’til we had to eat it. Here’s another one of those great South Dakota rest stops!
Driving back to Utah with Penguin co-pilots.
A DQ dipped cone. Wouldn’t have wanted to make the trip without it!
We stopped at the Deadwood Lodge in Deadwood, SD and decided to stay somewhere nice. Chris checked us in and they upgraded us to a 1 bedroom suite for our honeymoon and brought us a bottle of wine. Little do they know that we’ll be doing this drive again sometime and they just won us over. We’ll for sure stay here again. Such a nice place to rest for the night and start the next road trip day out right.
Penguin was happy too! They gave her 2 treats and glove and bag for picking up her poop.
We went out to a late dinner in Deadwood – for sure a cool town, just wish we’d gotten there sooner to enjoy it more!
Home Sweet Home, we got there on Tuesday late afternoon. Felt so nice to sleep in our own bed!
